Times tables tricks, explained
What 'times' means
3 × 4 means 3 groups of 4. Add 4 + 4 + 4 and you get 12.
Flip it around
3 × 4 is the same as 4 × 3. Knowing one fact gives you two, which halves what you need to learn.
2s, 5s and 10s
×2 is doubling. ×5 answers end in 0 or 5. ×10 just adds a zero to the end.
The 9s trick
The digits of every 9 × fact (up to 9 × 10) add up to 9: 9 × 7 = 63, and 6 + 3 = 9.
5, 6, 7, 8
Remember 7 × 8 = 56 by counting 5, 6, 7, 8 — the answer comes first: 56 = 7 × 8.
Practice tip
Sing one verse a day, then quiz yourself out of order. Mixed practice makes facts stick.
